October 2009 Writers' Conference

The Horace Greeley Foundation announced recently that the recipient of the 2009 Greeley Scholarship is Eric Garret of Stowe, Vermont. Two Greeley Scholarships are available each year to senior high school students statewide.   Students are required to submit a two-page essay on the impact of Horace Greeley on American Society.

Eric graduated from Rice Memorial High School in Burlington and was valedictorian of his senior class and president of the National Honor Society.  He was selected to “Go West Young Man” off to Stanford University this fall.

The Greeley Foundation was established in 2002 with a mission to promote public awareness of Horace Greeley, the great American who represented the voice, conscience, and very spirit and soul of our nation.  The intent of the Foundation is to re-capture Greeley’s example of hard work, sense of purpose, and the realization of the “American Dream”.  The infusion of these ideals into all levels of our educational system will help to provide a visualization of Horace Greeley as one of the great role models of our time.

The Vermont Senate and  House of Representatives honored the Foundation in 2007 with a Resolution that the General Assembly commemorate the life of Horace Greeley and the role that Vermont played in the intellectual and political development of this most distinguished American celebrating Greeley’s birthday each year on February 3rd.
